Lion-Parkson Foundation & Megasteel Award Scholarships Worth RM1.08 Million For Engineering Course In China

Kuala Lumpur, 25 August 2010 - The Lion Group again fulfilled its role as a caring corporate citizen when its Lion-Parkson Foundation in collaboration with Megasteel Sdn Bhd awarded scholarships totaling RM1.08 million to 13 diploma holders to pursue a 2-year degree course in Engineering, in University of Science & Technology Beijing (USTB), China.

The scholarships worth RM83,000 each, were presented by Lion-Parkson Foundation Chairman, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng witnessed by Lion Group Chairman & CEO, Tan Sri William Cheng; and Foundation Trustees, Madam Gooi Sui Guet and Dr Yulduz Emiloglu. Besides the university tuition fees, the students will be given a monthly allowance and provided with accommodation with utilities including electricity and water, as well as warm clothing allowance and return air ticket twice a year.

This is the third batch of students fully sponsored by the Lion Group for studies at USTB, starting from September this year until the middle of 2012. The previous batch of 25 students comprising Science students who have completed secondary schooling, is undergoing a four-year degree program in USTB which started in September 2008 and are expected to complete in the first quarter of 2012.

The degree program in USTB involves classroom-based study and practical training on steel making. During the semester breaks, the university will arrange to send the students for industrial attachment at local steel factories in China as part of the course requirements.

In her speech, Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng said, “The objective of this study program is to train and develop a group of young executives equipped with sound technical knowledge and experience in iron and steel making who can contribute to the development and success of our local iron and steel industry”.

The Lion-Parkson Foundation was launched in 1990 to administer and disburse funds for various needs such as education, charity and scientific research. Todate, the Foundation has sponsored 366 students through various sponsorship programmes worth nearby RM7.8 million. In addition, the Foundation has also contributed another RM11.8 million towards other causes, making a total contribution of RM19.6 million.

Another community project by The Lion Group is the Lion Group Medical Assistance Fund that provides financial assistance to needy Malaysian seeking medical treatment.
