WINNERS OF LION-PARKSON TSINGHUA CALLIGRAPHY COMPETITION 2016

Kuala Lumpur, 17 March 2016 – The final selection of the winning pieces for Lion-Parkson Tsinghua Calligraphy Competition 2016 was carried out in the Calligraphy, Cultural and Learning Centre in Tsinghua University in Beijing, China on 9th March 2016. The judging was done by 4 famous calligraphers and scholars in China, namely Professor Liu Tao from China Central Academy of Arts; Professor Liu Shi from School of Humanities, Tsinghua University; Professor Du Peng Fei, Deputy Executive Director of Arts Museum, Tsinghua University; and Dr Luo San Gui, China Guang Ming Daily Deputy Director of Photography and Art Department, Senior Editor and Calligrapher. Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng, Chairman of Lion-Parkson Foundation was present to witness the judging and selection of winners.

Altogether, there are 10 winners from the Public category and 11 winners from the University Students category. The judges in recognising and praising the overall high standard of calligraphy in Malaysia, decided with the organizers’ agreement to award one additional Merit prize in the University Students category in view of the comparable skills of the participants.

The competition, organised by Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) together with Beijing Tsinghua University and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), was held at UTAR campus in Bandar Sungai Long on 10 January 2016. Out of the 115 participants, 54 finalists were selected in the judging held at Xian’s Place in Kuala Lumpur by Puan Sri Chelsia Cheng; Professor Lim Chooi Kwa from UTAR, and calligraphers, Mr Chang Moke Wah, Mr Kerk Won Hoo and Mr HK Chia on 22 January 2016 and sent to Tsinghua University in Beijing for the final selection of winners.                                                        

The top 5 winners from each category will be invited to attend a 4-day calligraphy workshop and awards presentation ceremony at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China from 13 – 16 April this year. LPF will pay for all the expenses namely airfare, accommodation and meals for the top 5 student category winners, while the top 5 winners in the Public category will pay for their airfare and accommodation, with meals provided by the Foundation.
